I was pretty inspired by the new music Tumblr, One Week // One Band, which just had it’s launch on Monday.  Every week a new author is invited to take the helm and feature one of their favorite artists by posting a new track from that band every day of the week plus whatever supplemental material they see fit.

The goal of the site is to slow things down.  Rather than spending five minutes discovering the next big artist by listening to their lead single, spend an entire week exploring what someone’s done, how they got there, and why they’re awesome.

It got me thinking.

Even though I’m pretty up to date on the music that’s been released in the last couple years, I haven’t always been the avid music consumer I am today.  There are a lot of seminal acts from the earlier 2000s, 90s, and 80s that I haven’t heard enough of, and plenty that I haven’t heard at all.  I think we all have bands like that, that we never got around to listening to.

So what I want to do is early in the week I’ll announce an older artist I missed, spend about a week or so exploring their music and background and hopefully write some kickass posts documenting the process.

It’ll all be part of a regular series called Back[tracks].

One of the things I really liked

about One Week // One Band’s concept was the sense of collaboration.  Every week someone new takes the reigns and shares the music they love with people that may not have heard it.

It’d be pretty cool for Back[tracks] to take on that sort of collaborative form.  I know I’m not the only one that hasn’t heard every important band from the last 30 years.

If you dig the idea, spread the word

Do a Back[track] series of your own, reblog, follow, like the posts, etc.  I was thinking maybe if enough people are interested in doing their own Back[tracks] I’d set up some sort of central page to feature everyone that’s participated or even a collaborative mix-tape.

Also, if you have ideas, want to collaborate, etc. never hesitate to message me in my ask box!
